Cardboard Boxes vs. Plastic Containers

Plastic Containers vs. Boxes

As a former mover with over 5 years worth of experience, I can say that I would take a box any day over a plastic container. However, my reasons are selfish. Plastic containers are typically wider than most boxes but still have about the same depth. This is disastorous when the customer feels like since the box seems more sturdy, that they can pack it full with whatever they can get their hands on.

Boxes have almost always followed a standard size. Even if your company orders boxes with their logo on it from a boxing company, chances are that they will have to pick from certain dimensions. None of these dimensions will match the size of plastic containers that are sold in super stores. But there are a few disadvantages and advantages to both sides.

Box Advantages

  • Dimensions are made for moving purposes
  • Most commonly used
  • Easy to stack
  • Universal

Box Disadvantages

  • Less chance of being reused
  • Paper product, not environmentally friendly
  • If something is spilled inside, it can leak through

Plastic Container Advantages

  • Can be reused as many times as you want (as long as it remains in good condition)
  • Environmentally friendly
  • If something is spilled inside, it will not leak through

Plastic Container Disadvantages

  • Stackable, but not as balanced
  • Somewhat expensive
  • Traditionally not used on professional pack jobs
