FMCSA and AMSA Release Revised Consumer Education Material for Interstate Movers

Interstate residential goods movers need to provide consumers with the improved version of the consumer education brochure by the federal government, “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move.” Federal law makes it mandatory to provide this useful information before an order of service is executed.

This is a major step in the drive from AMSA for educating consumers. The revised publication has come down from around 60 pages to just 25 pages, and it is a major victory for both AMSA and its members. AMSA had placed a request with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for forming a special Household Goods Consumer Education Working Group having members from both the industry and the government for improving the quality of consumer education materials.

After the Surface Transportation Board brought changes in the rules of valuation last year, it became more important to carry out the revision. Then, the staff at AMSA worked with the FMCSA for revising the Rights & Responsibilities booklet. However, there was a huge delay in its release.

AMSA had to make requests to FMCSA, even reaching out to its Administrator, for expediting the release of the revised consumer material. Now that the document is released, it is important that AMSA members start using the new version of the material with immediate effect. It can be easily accessed at www.promover.org, the online store of AMSA.
