New Rules For Short-haul Drivers

New Rules For Short-haul Drivers

Understanding the rules for your drivers and giving that information direct to your fleet drivers is vital in the moving business. Making sure that all your drivers know the regulations they need to adhere to on the roads is important if you are looking after the safety of your team of employees.

The new regulations are looking at the distance traveled and the length of time driving. The requirement is not to go more than 150 miles from the base or be driving for more than a 12-hour day. If the driver goes above the new standards, a requirement for the driver is to take a thirty-minute break. If you know that your drivers are going to exceed this, then providing them with the means for taking the legally required break is important for the safety of your team.

The moving business is facing a difficult time and there could be those companies that push the short-haul drivers too far. A risk you should not be willing to take, making sure that your drivers are able to drive safely is going to be your main concern. Making sure they get home at the end of the working day is more important that pushing them too far and causing driving fatigue, and potentially an accident.

Training your drivers in the correct protocol will result in the driver following and knowing when they need to consider the appropriate action required. You, as a business need to support them.  If the time they have been driving and the distance is greater and meets the new regulations, they must take the thirty-minute break. It is up to the moving business to make sure their drivers are aware of the regulations.  It is about protecting the business from prosecution as well as protecting the drivers too.
