Moving an Upright Piano

Moving an Upright Piano

Use three pads to protect the piano. Start by placing a half folded pad in the middle, doing this helps keep all of the finished parts of the wood covered. Next cover both the left and right sides, make sure that the pads cover the legs, sides and corners of the piano. Then tape the top part, middle part and bottom part of the piano, wrap the tape around this two or three times to keep the pads completely in place, do this for the top and middle parts of the piano.

Next, prepare the four-wheeler by placing it at the base of the piano, parallel to the bottom. Using at least two people, lift the piano at a 180° degree angle, making the base parallel to the four-wheeler. Place the base of the piano on the middle of the four-wheeler (note: getting it as close to center is important, otherwise it can have a bad front or back tilt!).

  • Prepare piano ramp and/or four wheeler
  • Lift the piano at a 180 degree angle, parallel to the floor and place equidistant on four wheeler
  • (optional stability) Standing in front of the piano, run a strap underneath the four wheeler and around the piano. Tighten down strap, but not too tight as not to cause damage pressure to the wood.
  • One person walks backward, and one person forward
  • Person who goes backward must direct piece up ramp
  • Person who goes forward must push piece up the ramp
