Avoid Theft from your Movers

Avoid Theft from your Movers

Let’s face it; there is no way for a professional moving company to completely ensure the safety of your possessions from being lost or stolen. Though there are many different types of coverage’s and insurances in place on your move, it can still be scary to trust even the professionals with your belongings. Moving companies hire all different types of individuals and although they do their best to hire trustworthy individuals, sometimes untrustworthy people slip through the cracks.

To avoid theft of your personal belongings when using a professional moving company, be cautious not to do any of the following.

  • Never discuss where your valuable belongings are, or are going to be, in front of the movers. The fewer people that know where they are, the better chance you have of not having them taken.
  • Create a personal written inventory of your possessions. This can include photos, appraisals, insurance cards, etc… Make sure that your coverage is up to date.
  • Place your valuables into a safety deposit box at a bank (only if you are not moving far from your original destination) during the move and get them later, or purchase a fire-proof safe and put them in there.
  • Consider leaving your valuables with a friend or family member until your move is complete.
  • Unless specific instructions have been made about particular items, never leave your valuable possessions in the care of a professional moving company. Hire an insured carrier to transport or hand deliver your valuables to your doorstep

To an extent, consider the “if you want something done right, do it yourself” statement. If you want to keep your prized possessions safe, then do it yourself. Take these precautionary methods to keep your valuables safe when you are moving.
