Surviving the Summer

The summer is coming, you can feel it. The temperature is sky rocketing, the grass is greener and the jobs are crazier. Many movers overlook how important it is to stock up and prepare for the work. There are cases every year of heat stroke, dehydration, and sometimes even death due to the heat.

Mover’s are among the hardest working men alive, but the pace and heat of the summer can bog you down. Here is a list of five of the things you will need to be prepared for the pace and the heat –

  1. Hydration – Nothing is better than H2O. Gatorade, all though a thirst quencher, can actually dehydrate you in the long run. When Gatorade is used for sports, it is drank in small periods of time, but if you are on a 12 hour job, your going to need some water. Try getting a gallon jug of water from a store or gas station, fill it up half way, freeze it, and then pour water on top of it. Your water will be sure to be cool all day long as the heat thaws the frozen water slowly.
  2. Use a towel – How many times have you been running from the house to the truck, with no intentions of slowing down, and had sweat drip into your eyes? It can blind you momentarily and hurt. If you keep a hand towel with you in your pocket, you can wipe down your face, forehead and arms while on your way back to the truck. You also will run a much less chance of sweating on the customers furniture.
  3. Wear a shirt that breathes – Underarmor or any other kind of sports T-Shirts and shorts are a good choice. However, if you work for a company that has uniforms, try communicating to your boss that having uniforms that breathes is best.
  4. Running Shoes – Though you need to be extra careful that you don’t drop anything on your feet, running shoes are perfect for summer use. The traction, durability and agility that you get from running shoes are unmatched.
  5. Sun block – Sometimes on moves, there is down time and you won’t be able to be inside around air conditioning all the time. The sun can beat down on you and give you a sun burn if you’re not careful, bring a small bottle of sun block and it won’t be mad that you did. Chap Stick is also a handy item to have; the sun can also burn your lips.oo
