Coping with the Stress of Moving Claims

In handling moving claims, you can be assured that there will be high-levels of stress involved concerning all parties. From the moving side, you are having to deal with angry and upset people, who just want to be settled into their new home surrounded by the comfort of their own belongings… and you are left to deal with the brunt of their calls and although you had no part in the damage of their items, you are the one who is left to pick up the pieces and ensure that their items are fixed, replaced, or a monetary solution is resolved.

So, how do you cope with these high-stress situations and maintain your composure while handling these ordeals and ensuring that everyone involved is happy as their case is being settled? Here are some tips that will allow you to handle your stress in a manner that is beneficial to all parties concerned while you are sorting out your claims.

  • Prioritize: Set a schedule for yourself and your claims to ensure that you don’t get bombarded with several claims at one time, and you find yourself not knowing where to begin. Set aside those that need to be handled first, as well as those that are top priority, such as military claims.
  • Understand: Put yourself in the shoes of those who are affected by damage to their goods. They may be yelling and screaming at you, but instead of taking it personally, understand how they are feeling regarding the situation. Wouldn’t you be upset as well if your grandmother’s clock was damaged in your move across the country?
  • Break: Take advantage of your breaks and lunchtime. Never work through lunch unless you absolutely must. Have lunch with a close friend and vent your frustration, then leave it alone and enjoy your time and food with your friend. It’s okay to take time for yourself and settle your mind before diving back into your work.
  • Breath: When all else fails, remember to breath. You will be shocked to find out how much stress we allow to build in our bodies, that we can easily rid from ourselves simply by taking a few deep breaths.

Handling claims can easily be one of the most stressful positions in the moving industry. But allowing yourself to handle them in a manner that is sufficient to yourself, your co-workers and your client’s will help you to not only deal with them in a timely fashion, but in a more productive and positive manner as well.
