Meet Edward Gong, Professional Piano Mover

Edward Gong was a local legend in his small town of Berkeley, California for his talent in single handedly moving over 7,000 pianos by himself. Mr. Gong utilized people for pivot points, but only to help roll the dolly or to grip the corner.

Mr. Gong studied for his degree in physics at the UC of Berkeley and was known by almost everyone in his hometown. According to Yelps urban legend section “Years ago he moved a roommate’s piano using the three of us weaklings as [pivot] points. It’s like watching Superman or an optical illusion!”

Edward Gong was called different nick names by the locals throughout his life: Eddie, T-Shirt Ed, Private, Head Usher, Artist, Old Workout Guy, The One Man Piano Mover and Unc, but Mr. Gong did not care about the names and would simply explain that “its physics”, as he referred to how he was able to move them by himself.

Edward Gong died at the age of 85 at the Veterans Home of Yountville. He moved pianos until he was 80 years old. Over his 45 year career, he moved over 7,000 pianos, according to his niece. Edward will always be remembered and respected in his community, and all over the world.
