It is important to the FMCSA that protecting for consumers against fraud. Fraud in the moving business effects many people and the FMCSA is looking into ways to protect consumers from potential fraudsters. This is now sitting at nine members that are able to deal with the growing fraudulent activity that is taking place in the moving industry.
These are sad times when moving companies who want to work for the military, but only in the household goods movement area, are required to have a bond in place for $75,000. This is a requirement based on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. A motion, which was trying to procure exemption from this requirement, has failed.
This conference was hailed a success, there were presentations from a number of different organizations including the FMCSA, the California Moving & Storage Association and American Transportation Research Institute. This three day event was well attended by those in the moving industry, who were keen to learn of new developments, in a variety of different topics. These topics included the most up to date technology devices available in the removal business.
As with all cases of fraud, the FMCSA has taken action against those movers that have failed to provide the service that they charged customers for. It has been found that these companies, which are situated in Florida, South Carolina and Maryland, have failed their customers and have therefore shut down five companies because of their bad practice.
The well-known “Hours of Service” rule that is presently in effect for any long haul driver is currently undergoing some interesting changes that will play an important role in regards to the moving industry.
The current proposal to reduce paperwork on the trucking and moving industry may have a great impact on businesses and consumers by reducing costs. Currently, commercial drivers are required to fill out Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) on pre- and post-trip inspections. The new proposal will eliminate this paperwork for trucks with no defects upon inspection.
