Mobile Phone Use in Meetings a Bad Idea

If you want to succeed in business, it is important that you learn to avoid some of the basic errors you may be making if you want to get a promotion. It doesn’t matter the type of business you are in, from moving companies to investment banking, if you use your cellphone during a meeting you are harming your potential to move higher up the corporate ladder.

It is important to realize that many people see the use of cellphones in meetings as being rude.  To the it means you are not taking an interest in the presentations that other people have put together to help the business move forward.

Meetings can be time consuming, but at the end of the day, they are the most important times when you are able to discuss different aspects of the business and how it can develop further. It is not a place for your mobile phone to even be visible, let alone for using the device either to answer calls or to send text messages or emails.

It gives the impression that you are not interested in the company, which will have a negative impact on your career.  Those important people in the meetings that can advance your career will be making mental notes of your behavior.

Therefore, if you are looking to move forward in your company or career, don’t take your mobile phone into a meeting. It demonstrates a lack of respect for both the person conducting the meeting and for the topic covered. It is important to realize that the older generation workforce are the ones that are likely to offer promotions.  They are the most offended by the use of mobile phones in meetings as it shows disrespect for the meeting and a lack of self-control when it comes to the whims of your phone.
